248 – A Poem by Norman W. Holden

Patriotism is as individual as we are independent.
However, on this fine day a birthday celebration is well underway.
Thousands gathered under a cloudless blue-sky canopy
in the small Colorado town the Ute’s named, Ouray.

Each side of Main Street was aligned ten deep.
Flag-waving onlookers dressed in all manners of red, white and blue.
Young and old patriots full of pride gathered to display their honor,
a cacophony of siren wails, rejoicing waves and songs of hooray.

The water-soaked small-town parade brought smiles to all,
yet nothing short of mist in one’s eye could befall.
Especially when the crowd summoned the call,
cheers erupted — USA, USA.

Proud Americans all on this sacred July day.
Blessed are we grateful for our freedom earned long ago.
Thankful to God for our nation’s Independence Day.

Love for one’s country should not come but once a year.
Patriotism, a solemn duty we should never betray.
But rest assured much devotion can be found,
not to be outdone by the western mountains abound.
A heartfelt celebration in full display on this, America’s 248th birthday.
